Don't Be Scammed by Work at Home Offers
It happens every day, even to those who think it couldn't happen to them... they hear of an "awesome" work at home job, someone claims they've been paid, so you send in your money, and Bam! You learn the hard way.
I sent off, many years ago, for a book full of work at home companies. Paid too much money for it, only to find out the companies were no longer in business, or were the type where you buy materials from them to make a product, send in the product expecting payment, and then the products are rejected... and you lose, not only the time you spent assembling it, but also the money for materials and shipping.
I was reading about one such company tonight, Disciple's Cross. I saw a post from someone, talking about how great it is. Yep, it sounded great! That's why I decided to do a quick search. One thing I've learned over the years is... the internet is my friend! lol When you find a company that sounds great, like this one did after reading that post, put in the name of the company in parenthesis, and add the word "complaints" or "scam". That way, you'll quickly find out any negative words that have come out about that company.
One thing to remember, however, is almost any company in the world is going to have at least a few complainers, especially if it is a large company. For example, I've heard some swear that GlobalTestMarket is a scam, while it is one of the survey companies I love, as they have always been reliable and paid every cent I earned. The thing is to dig in... especially before you send any money... and really read up about the company. When I did a search on Disciple's Cross, I, quickly, came up with sooooo many results, and some of the ones I paid close attention to were on work at home forums, where people like us share information. They've been there, done that.
Another thing you can always do, as well, is check the BBB.
When it doubt, my recommendation would be to not mess with it, especially if they expect YOU to pay anything. As I always say, the entire point of working at home is for you to make money, not pay it out!
If any of you have questions about any specific companies, feel free to shoot me an email, and if I know anything about it, I'll let ya know!
Nite y'all!

Starting Chantix Today... Wish Me Luck!!!
Right now's probably not the best time to try to quit smoking, I'm sure most would admit that, with all the stress I've been under lately! lol But... this time, for once, I really think I'm ready! I'm terrified, yes, but I'm sooooo ready!
I've smoked since I was about 14. I quit, as soon as I found out I was pregnant with my first son. Quit for several years, while I had him and two other babies... until my (now 14 year old) son was kidnapped! He was only gone an hour and 45 minutes, but as any mother can imagine.... it seemed like several lifetimes! I wish I never would have picked up that cigarette that night.... but I did, and I just never quit.
My kids have always tried to get me to quit, but it's always been, "I'm too stressed out... I'd probably have a heart attack if I quit..." , all those things that we smokers convince ourselves of. Well, lately, my 9 year old has been through entirely too much stress. And he worries constantly about his Mama. He only recently met his father, so all his life, I've been "all he had", and it's pretty scary to a kid, worrying that something might happen to your "only" parent. He's seen me in the hospital with tubes in me, getting surgeries, etc. Way too much. Anyway, his panic has increased lately, with some of the stress we've been through. And my smoking makes it that much worse. I'll never be a "perfect" mother, but if I can do this one thing to help all my kids... I definitely want to try.
Anyway, I am pretty confident this time. I took Chantix once before, but with many things going on, never refilled it. This time, I already have three months worth prescribed... I'm GOING to keep taking it! When I took it for the short time before, it worked wonders. Within a few days, I cut down from about two packs a day, to just a few cigarettes a day. My ex could light up a smoke right beside me, and I wouldn't want one... which is major for me. Soooo... I know I can do it! Please keep me in your thoughts through this... this is a big step for me, but it's also a huge positive change for my babies!
On a lighter note... I know people tend to gain weight when they quit smoking... well, I gain weight because I have hypothyroidism! lol I got my dosage adjusted yesterday on that too... 'cause I've been sleeping ALL the time, which happens when my thyroid isn't working. Soooo, maybe I'll get lucky, and the Chantix will help me quit smoking, and getting my thyroid working will make me lose weight too... hey, a girl can dream, can't she?!!! lol
But, hopefully, within a few days, with the thyroid meds getting in my system, I'll have more energy and be able to get back to work as usual... God, I hope so, I need the money! lol
Anyway, just an update on what's going on with me!!!!
Happy Earning everyone, and thanks so much for stopping by!!!

Update on Opinion Outpost Payments
Opinion Outpost has been one of my top companies for the past year or so. There are always surveys to be done, and I can easily cash out many times in a month. I have, also, been thrilled, because I have been receiving their checks, usually within a week of cashing out. I just got news about their soon to come updated paying policies, however, and am a bit perplexed. They already started giving the option of receiving Amazon gift cards, instantly, upon cashing out, which is cool... but some of us really need the actual money. They'll still be giving money, but, I guess at the end of 2009, they're phasing out checks, and going, instead, to prepaid debit cards. Again, this could have advantages and disadvantages... there are fees with prepaid gift cards, although, according to them, the fees would be waived if you cash out at $25. The fee is only $1.50, but still... I would rather just get my check a week after requesting it, and still be able to cash out at $5, rather than waiting for $25.... OR... why don't they just offer Paypal???!!! It would be faster, more efficient, and it shouldn't matter whether we request at $5 or $25... I don't know... I guess I'm resistant to change, when something I like is already working fine for me...
Of course, I'll still stick with Opinion Outpost, because they are a reliable company, and they do pay as promised.... and, they do give you plenty of opportunities to earn that money... but, here's the "official word" from them... you decide...
We at Opinion Outpost are excited to announce two new and improved ways to cash Opinion Points. Ojae Barnes, Director of Opinion Outpost, explains how these upgrades will affect panel members.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are committed to offering you compelling rewards for participating in surveys. We will continue to look for better ways to say 'thanks' with our guaranteed rewards for surveys you've completed.
I want to share some exciting news about our up-coming reward options. Our popular Opinion Points program will not change (10 points per dollar) - however, you will now have more options for cashing out your rewards faster and easier than before.
Soon you will have the choice to redeem the full cash value of your Opinion Points for Amazon.com gift codes. The best aspect of this incentive is that you will receive your gift code instantly on screen and by email*.
Before the end of 2009 you will also be able to redeem your Opinion Points for a Citi prepaid debit card. You can either receive a virtual debit card or choose to have a physical card** mailed to you.
Currently we send a check in the mail to panelists for their redeemed Opinion Points. This process was slow and frustrating for everyone and we feel our new options will be a vast improvement. As a result, we will phase out sending checks as a means of cashing in points early next year. Of course, your point balance will remain unaffected through this transition.
We're excited about this improved offering for the Opinion Outpost community. If you have any questions, feel free to email our service team at panel@opinionoutpost.com. You may also call a representative of Opinion Outpost at (877) 254-1234. Or talk to us on Facebook or Twitter.
**If you choose to have a physical Citi prepaid debit card mailed to you, for any dollar amount between $5 and $24.99 a $1.50 charge will be deducted for the cost of the physical debit card. For any amount of $25 or more, we will cover this fee for you.
A Couple Updates on Opinion Outpost
Ok, this first one, I find disturbing. Would love to hear what y'all think too... kinda blew my mind to read this!!!
Maybe this was why they were having some issues with us being deleted and/or not called
By PAUL FOY, AP Business Writer Paul Foy, Ap Business Writer – Tue Sep 29, 10:37 pm ET
SALT LAKE CITY – Children as young as 13 were manning phone banks for a company that does market research and political surveys from call centers in seven states, federal investigators said Tuesday.
Children that young can't legally be employed except on farms.
The U.S. Department of Labor fined Orem, Utah-based Western Wats for hiring three 13-year-olds, and for working an additional 1,479 children more than three hours on a school day or more than eight hours on a weekend day, among other violations. Those children were all 14 or 15 years old.
The $550,000 penalty was among the highest of its kind ever assessed against a U.S. company, officials said.
More unusual was the sheer volume of children the company was hiring, said Lee Ann Dunbar, the Labor Department's district director for Utah, Montana and Wyoming.
Dunbar said she found it unusual that a company would employ children that young to make cold calls to adults.
"The company would have to explain that," she said.
Western Wats disputed the fine and said it would fight the child-labor allegations in Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.
"We do disagree with the DOL's finding and have appeal on several grounds," corporate counsel Stacey Jenkins said.
Jenkins told The Associated Press that children under 16 made up 5 percent to 7 percent of the staffing.
One 13-year-old, who was stuffing envelopes, is the daughter of a corporate executive, he said. The others were dismissed after a few weeks when the company determined they were too young.
"We see a lot of people come and go, a lot of churn," he said.
Last year, the company employed 11,000.
Investigators found that Western Wats sometimes paid children less than the $7.25-an-hour federal minimum wage, although those violations appeared to be an oversight and the company agreed to pay about $5,000 in back wages, Dunbar said.
"We did not find that it was a willful violation," she said.
No child was employed against his or her will. Western Wats' need for workers fluctuates wildly, and the hiring of children may have been necessary for the company to meet its obligations.
During the school year, children under 16 can't work more than three hours on a school day or more than 18 hours a week. When school is not in session, they are limited to 40 hours a week.
Labor investigators can make unannounced visits to U.S. workplaces randomly or based on tips or complaints, interviewing employees and reviewing payroll records. They wouldn't immediately be able to confirm a worker's age, but can check records.
"It's hard to tell the age of an employee just by looking," she said.
Dunbar wouldn't say what led investigators to Western Wats.

Why I Love Working At Home
Man, it has been a really rough year. And, as some of you know, I lost my Grandfather about a week ago. The depression has really gotten me down. I, also, have a variety of health problems. For the past three weeks, it seems I have done nothing but sleep. I have not been motivated to do anything, and even if I was, I have simply not had the energy. I don't know if it's stress related, or more likely, due to my hypothyroidism, or a combination of both those and other factors.
The good news is, I did at least get my thyroid meds adjusted today... unfortunately, it's all a guessing game, so we'll have to see how it works, and it'll be a bit before I know, but I'll be thankful for any energy I can get at this point! lol
Anyway, at least working at home, I do have that freedom. Yes, it stinks financially, when I'm unable to work, but at least I can make up for it at other times. I know many of us who look to supplement our income online, it is due to health problems... or... kids, which I have, as well! lol I love that I can decide that I am going to go to my daughter's concert, or my son's event at school. I can take the time to take my daughter to go get her permit, whenever HER schedule allows! lol I can be here at home and take care of them if they get sick, and still get on the computer and make a little money.
My "work" is interesting, changing from day to day. My "work" makes a difference... I get to have my voice heard, which is very important to me. I get to try new products and learn about new ideas. It has given me confidence to write to companies with suggestions, complaints and even compliments. I love that aspect!
Of course, there are the downsides too... you do have to be motivated. For the past few weeks, for example, I have barely made any money, because I have been physically and mentally unable to concentrate on the work I need to get done. There are, also, times when I simply can't concentrate, due to my motherly duties... which is to be expected... or the kids just being stir crazy, and wanting to tell me everything they've been storing up in their heads for two weeks, AS SOON AS I start working on a project! lol There is, also, a lot of competition for online opportunities, but, I have found, if you are reliable and honest, these companies do, often, tend to offer opportunities to you more often than others. One of the worst parts, however, is when they pay through check, and you simply cannot rely on the postal service. Ugh! I have been experiencing that more than not lately... and that is sooooo frustrating!!! When any of us do any kind of work for pay, we expect that pay, and depend on it (unless you're just so wealthy you don't ever have to worry about bills, in which case, you probably wouldn't be spending your time on these kinds of jobs anyway! lol). One of the more reliable survey companies I have been with for many, many years, has owed me a check for $75 for a few months now. Unfortunately, the check keeps getting lost in the mail. I know that the company in question is telling me the truth, but man, it's getting overwhelming... got, yet another, email from them today, letting them know that my check had been returned to them. I guess it'll be a nice surprise when it does finally arrive!
Anyway, I guess any "job" has it's pros and cons, but all in all, with my health issues, and just being a mom who loves the ability to take the time off for my kiddos, without repercussions, I definitely prefer working from home.
Would love to hear your thoughts. Why do you want to earn from home? What are the pros and cons in your opinion? Any companies you would recommend over others? I would love to hear your experiences!
Also, while I'm at it, let me know what you would like to see more or less of on here. As some of you know, I started another page for regular work at home jobs, and one for contests, and then, of course, this site, for all those great survey sites, focus groups, etc. I would love to hear your suggestions! And, if anyone needs help figuring out any of these sites or anything, please, feel free to contact me (there's a box on the right side of the page). I'd be glad to help, to the best of my ability!
Thanks so much to all of you for your continued reading, and a huge welcome to all our new readers and followers! Hope to continue on, and hopefully we'll all have a successful time!
Hugs,
A
